Foundation’s Spring 2013 Grant Recipients

Kirtland Youth Theatre Drawing

The Foundation is excited to announce that in May we proudly gave $16,000 in grants to support Kirtland College.  Below are the initiatives that the Foundation will help support in the upcoming year… Kirtland’s Early Childhood Learning Center to assist a student with their childcare costs, making it easier for them to attend class. Service Learning for a “Break Away’s Alternative Breaks Citizenship” initiative to help develop leaders to bring back to Kirtland’s campus. The Kirtland Youth Theatre to continue to bring art and culture to the youth of Kirtland’s service district and beyond.   The youngsters respond greatly to the Youth Theatre program and especially to the live performances. Last week when we still had snow on the ground Lynne Ruden, Development Manager for the Kirtland Foundation put out the invite to women in Kirtland's Community to join her on Saturday April 27th for Grayling's Ladies Night Out, including local hearty fare before partaking in some "shopping therapy." The women met at the Mainstream Steak and Ribs Restaurant for some local hearty fare, many meeting new friendly faces for the first time. One of the new friendly faces was Valda L. Byrd MD, Pediatrics Grayling Mercy Hospital who kept everyone in stitches with her hilarious sense of humor depicting her upcoming plans for a trip to Chicago with her daughter. The Kirtland Foundation hosted its 2nd Regional Chamber of Commerce Business After-hours on March 7, 2013  from 6 -8 p.m. in the Student Center.  The Center was at full capacity as approximately 170 guests attended to network and be present for the Chamber of Commerce PowerPoint presentations.  Michigan beer and wines were sold and hors d’oeuvres were  available for the guests.  Attending the event were area business owners and citizens of Kirtland’s service area.  Also present was State Representative Bruce Rendon, Senator Moolenaar’s district liaison Bev Bodem, Congressman Benishek’s representative Daniel Blough, Congressman Camp’s representative Jeremiah Napier, Senator Stabenow’s regional manager Brandon Fewins and Senator Levin’s … [Read more...]

Women's Day Event at Kirtland

On Saturday, February 9th, Kirtland Community College hosted their 1st Annual Women’s Day event. The event served multiple purposes; it gave women an afternoon to enjoy themselves while numerous vendors offered specials and the Foundation raised money for general education scholarships. As the Foundation’s Lynne Ruden put it, “This event is not only to help raise awareness of Kirtland and its student’s need for general scholarships but also to help provide a forum by which our smaller “mom & pop” non-franchised merchants (many with home-based businesses) can network with other merchants within Kirtland’s coverage area.” With a long list of vendors that included The Tanger Outlets, The Silver Lining Boutique, Darcy Lewis, The … [Read more...]
